This 10 minute video guides you through the process of creating your own mosaic planters at home!
Each kit contains all the supplies you will need to create TWO 3"x3"x3" square planters. The only things you will need are some water and a dry paper towel! Supplies included are as follows:
(x1) Instruction Sheet, (x2) Template sheets, (x2) Clear Acrylic Planters, (x2) White Plastic Pot with saucers, (x2) Assorted Glass Packets, (x2) hand cut glass Monstera leaves, (x2) Bottles of Glue, (x1) Bag of Grout, (x1) Popsicle Stick, (x2) Disposable Cups, (x1) Tweezers, (x1) Scraper, (x1) Sponge, (x2) Pairs of Large Disposable Gloves
Using the two paper templates of the planter sides, design your planters with the assorted glass provided. The space between each piece should be no larger than 1/16-1/8 of an inch (if possible). If the glass has a texture, place the texture side face up. If your kit contains glass dots, use the flat side down. This kit contains enough glass to cover all the sides of both the planters. For design ideas, scroll to the ideas video towards the bottom of this page!
Once you have mapped out your mosaics on the templates, position each planter on their side and apply the glass of your choice to the planter using your fingers and/or tweezers. Use glue sparingly, as using more will cause the pieces to slide. You can apply the glue in a variety of ways, but personally I like to spread a thin layer of glue with my finger, wiping my finger clean with a paper towel as I go, and adding more glue, as needed. You can also apply a dot of glue to the back of each piece as you work if you prefer. Work on one side at a time and allow it to dry before moving onto the next side. Be sure to use a good amount of glue on the corners as they are the most likely spots that pieces will pop off if there is not enough glue holding them. Keep in mind that the heavier you are on the glue, the longer it will take to dry. Set the planters aside and allow them to dry for 24 hours.
Before mixing the grout, give the glass pieces a little wiggle to see if any of them are loose. If they are, reglue them and allow them to set.
For easy clean up, put some cardboard or newspaper down for you to work on (Pro Tip: you can use the box for this kit if you unfold it!) Fill one of the disposable cups ¾ of the way with clean water and put on gloves. You may choose to mix half of the grout at once to grout one planter at a time, or mix all of the grout and do both at once. (Doing both at once will require working quickly). If you are going to grout both planters at once, add four tablespoons of water to the second disposable cup. If you are mixing half of the grout, add two tablespoons of water. Apply the grout to the piece using the popsicle stick and scraper provided, making sure to scrape in all directions to work the grout into the crevices. Scrape off as much excess grout into the grout cup as possible before moving onto the next step. When scraping at the edges, scrape at an angle to “bevel” the grout.
Once you have removed all of the excess grout that you can with the scraper, switch to the sponge. Dip the sponge in the clean water and squeeze it out to remove any excess water before you wipe the top of the glass. Gently wipe the grout away to reveal your patterns. You will need to rinse your sponge in the cup of water while doing this, making sure the sponge is not dripping water after each rinse.
Once you have finished grouting, you can dispose of the grout cup and water cup. DO NOT dispose of grout or water in a sink or toilet. Pour into an old can or paper towels and throw in the trash, or simply let them evaporate and throw them away afterwards. Grout WILL solidify in pipes!!!
Allow the grout to set for 15-20 minutes and gently brush away any excess grout crumbs with a clean paper towel. Make sure that the bottom and top edges are free of grout for a cleaner look and a level planter.
Planters should be allowed to dry in a room temperature area for 24 hours before handling. Use a clean paper towel to wipe away any remaining crumbs on the piece once it is fully dry.
Ugh! I'm sorry, I know it can be frustrating when you are so close to seeing the finished product! Yes, it can be fixed. To replace pieces that have fallen out during the grouting stage, be sure to watch this video:
This kit is meant for persons 18+ and older. Minors should have an adult present when working with glass. The small pieces of glass in this kit are a choking hazard, have sharp edges, and should be handled with caution. DO NOT, under any circumstances, leave children or individuals with a tendency to put inedible items in their mouths alone with this kit. Adult supervision is strongly recommended for any person(s) 18 years or younger.
The scrap used to create these kits is leftover from cutting all of the None of This is Cake stained glass pieces. All monstera leaves are hand-cut from scrap glass and vary in size, color, and shape. All scraps are then cut down into small pieces that are perfect for mosaic kits!
Once you have completed your kit, you may find yourself with extra glass scrap and tweezers you have no use for. Clean, glue/grout free tweezers and glass can be brought back to None of This is Cake at any in-person market for $3 off your next mosaic kit!
All other supplies in this kit are disposable. Glue provided in this kit is Weldbond. Scraper and sponge can be rinsed clean to be used for your own future mosaic projects, but can not be returned with glass and tweezers.
Absolutely! You can order your own mosaic kit anytime by emailing noneofthisiscake@gmail.com with your preferred grout and glass colors! None of This is Cake requires 3 days notice for all mosaic kit orders. You can customize the grout color (black/white), glass colors (choose shades of one color, two, or three+), as well as customized precut glass pieces. All mosaic kits come with (x2) handcut glass monstera precuts. Certain glass colors may not be available. Some glass colors and types are more expensive than others, and will be reflected in the final kit price (example: pink glass is made with real gold, and tends to be more expensive than other glass colors. If you want a kit of all shades of pink, the price will reflect that).
Most of the glass that is used for stained glass can not be recycled due to the coatings and additives it could contain. Your purchase of this mosaic kit helps keep glass out of the landfill and keeps my studio green!
If you have access to UV resin and a UV light, you can complete this kit within one days time! We use UV resin in my 2-hour mosaic classes so that students can get the full mosaic experience- grouting included without the wait! If you use UV resin, be sure apply a thin layer as glass has a tendency to slide around on a thick layer of resin.
This is the link to the resin I use. Note that this is an Amazon link. You can order directly from the company, but in my experience, it is still fulfilled by Amazon.
I totally get it- not everyone likes plants or has a green thumb! Other uses include but are not limited to:
-Pen holder
-Flameless candle holder
-Vase for fresh cut or fake flowers
-Napkin holder
- Decorative centeripece
If you're hooked on mosaics now or are just interested in breaking some glass, the most basic tool you could get would be mosaic nippers. I personally like the Breda Mosaic Nippers, but these are a significant investment.

A cheaper alternative to the Breda nippers would be the Leponitt Mosaic Nippers https://www.edhoy.com/20572057.html
Although each kit colors vary, there are many different designs you could choose to make! Try out one of the designs featured here, or create your own!
Pro Tip: Be sure to create your designs on the template sheet first! This will help to make sure you like your final design and that you have enough of each of the colors you want to use to complete your design!
